The American Red Cross Connecticut Chapter responded to a house fire on Deerfield Drive in Newtown this evening.  A team of seven Red Crossers – volunteers and staff – provided canteen services to more than 100 firefighters from six fire companies on the scene.  Sandi Cole, the Chapter’s Director of Emergency Services, said the Red Cross provided more than 800 servings of beverages and snacks.  “Our canteen service helps to keep first responders warm and hydrated and keep their energy up during a long fire response.  We’re glad to provide this support to people who put themselves on the line for their community.”

Cole said the Red Cross will meet with the family affected by the fire to determine what their emergency needs are.  “We’ve made contact with the family and will be meeting with them to see how we can help.”

Red Cross disaster assistance is free of charge, a gift made possible by generous donations and the work of volunteers.
